Peter Spennato, Martial Arts Student, Past to Present

For as long as he can remember, Peter Spennato has always been interested in martial arts. And even now that he is a licensed dentist with a clinic at San Pedro, CA, Dr. Peter Spennato, DDS is still very much involved in martial arts. As a matter of fact, he is currently going through training for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu combatives with 8th degree Master Fred Messersmith while also training in Korean Tang Soo Do.

What Peter loves most about training in martial arts is the discipline that it instills in the students. When you are trained in martial arts, you don’t go out looking for fights or engaging others to a “duel” to show off your moves. It’s actually the other way around. You try to avoid being involved in a physical fight as much as possible because you know you can seriously hurt your opponent, but when the need arises, you are well-equipped to protect yourself.

In other words, martial arts trains you to defend yourself and this is what Peter has also been telling others about his training—he’s only ever going to use his training when the situation compels him to defend himself. Otherwise, he’s only too happy to keep training and joining competitions. (He’s been competing throughout his years of training.)

It was in 1969 when he earned his brown belt in Judo under the tutelage of Grand Master Yamada. It was also in the same year when he decided to train in Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art, with Chuck Norris. He continued training in Korean martial arts under brothers Bob and Ralph Algeria, and Ted Hausley.

In 1973, he tested for 1st degree black belt under Grand Master Hwang Kee. Once he earned his 1st degree black belt, he trained for his 2nd and 3rd degree black belt under Grand Master Daryl Khalid and tested for the black belts under Grand Master J.C. Shin. For his 4th, 5th and 6th degree black belts, he tested under Grand Master Daryl Khalid.

And as mentioned above, he is currently training for 8th degree under Master Fred Messersmith, in Korean Tang Soo Do and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu combatives.

Clearly, Peter Spennato is serious about his martial arts training. Even when his job at the clinic and at his property management company, Painless Properties, keeps him on his toes all day, he makes sure to allocate time for his passion for learning and mastering different disciplines.
